New Tomb Raider Games Not at Risk

Crystal Dynamics is undergoing structural changes as they work on new Tomb Raider game projects, impacting 20 employees from production and central operations teams over the past year. However, the production of both Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Legacy of Atlantis remains unaffected.

Crystal Dynamics has announced a new round of layoffs, the fourth in the last twelve months. As the studio continues development of the next Tomb Raider game, twenty employees from the production and central operations teams have been let go, a decision the company describes as difficult but necessary for its structural changes and long-term goals. This follows a previous reduction in force in November 2023, when nearly thirty employees across different departments were laid off. Currently, Crystal Dynamics is developing Tomb Raider: Catalyst, slated for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Lara Croft's next adventure will take her through northern India following a mythical disaster. In addition to Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the studio is partnering with Microsoft on the next Perfect Dark game and collaborating with Flying Wild Hog on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a revamp of the original Tomb Raider, scheduled to launch in 2026 on the same platforms. The latest installment in the main Tomb Raider franchise is being developed as a single-player adventure using Unreal Engine 5, to be published by Amazon Games. There have been no significant updates on this title since early 2024.

Restructuring and Layoffs Impacting AAA Game Studios Including Crystal Dynamics Amidst Industry Challenges and Shift Towards Prioritization of Upcoming Tomb Raider Project

These organizational shifts follow Embracer Group's acquisition of Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix in 2022. As the parent company restructures into three separate entities, Crystal Dynamics faces industry-wide challenges including rising costs, shifting player habits, and a cautious investment environment. These factors have prompted staff reductions not only at Crystal Dynamics, but also at companies such as Microsoft Gaming, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and Riot Games, collectively resulting in thousands of layoffs. Crystal Dynamics, under Embracer Group, has not released a new AAA title since Marvel's Avengers in 2020. However, the studio has affirmed that the upcoming Tomb Raider project remains a priority. While a release date for the next main Tomb Raider game has not been set, the studio has stated that active production continues and these organizational changes do not threaten the future of the franchise.
