Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the PS5 Pro is upgrading to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) version 2.0. This update enhances compatible games with improved stability, fluidity, and sharper visuals, emphasizing finer details. PSSR 2.0 employs AI to analyze and reconstruct each pixel, resulting in more precise rendering of textures, lighting, and motion. The technology also allows developers to adjust parameters, balancing visual fidelity with performance. Several studios are already implementing the update to enhance their games. Konami is sharpening details like grass and shadows in Silent Hill f, enriching the game's atmosphere. Electronic Arts is leveraging the technology in Dragon Age: The Veilguard to ensure stable frame rates and refined rendering. Remedy Entertainment, Ninja Theory, and Square Enix are also applying PSSR 2.0 to their titles, achieving enhanced visual fidelity in Control, Alan Wake 2, Hellblade 2, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, respectively. Koei Tecmo is optimizing Nioh 3 and Rise of the Ronin to improve the clarity of detailed environments and fast-paced action. Capcom is integrating the tech into Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon's Dogma 2.
Developers are reporting significant visual improvements. According to Konami, the technology makes grass and shadows clearer than ever in Silent Hill f. Maciej Kurowski, Technical Director at BioWare, noted that the updated PSSR provides a noticeable boost to image quality in Dragon Age: The Veilguard without sacrificing performance. Tatu Aalto from Remedy Entertainment praised the efficient sampling without compromising image stability, and Ninja Theory highlighted the vivid particle effects. Naoki Hamaguchi, Director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, stated that details like character hair are sharper, and image processing is smoother due to reduced flickering and afterimage issues. According to Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog, the new PS5 system software update, launching on March 17, 2026, includes PSSR 2.0. The update became available on March 16 at 10 a.m. Pacific time. To activate PSSR 2.0, users must first download the latest system software update. Once updated, navigate to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and enable "Enhance PSSR Image Quality." This ensures the latest version of PSSR is active for all supported games.
More Major Titles Support PSSR 2.0 on PS5 Pro, Enhancing Visuals for Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Sony has confirmed that many major titles will be compatible with PSSR 2.0, including Cyberpunk 2077, and Control: Ultimate Edition, in addition to the titles mentioned above. The PSSR 2.0 update will also be available for several upcoming titles, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Crimson Desert when they launch on the PS5 Pro. To enable PSSR 2.0, access the video options on the PS5 Pro and select the "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" option. Games that already support PSSR will directly benefit from this enhancement. With this update, players can look forward to enhanced visual experiences on their PS5 Pro consoles.
