Tomb Raider Studio, Crystal Dynamics, Implements Further Staff Reductions

Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider game series, announced its fourth round of staff reductions in 12 months on Wednesday, impacting 20 employees across both development and administrative departments. Crystal Dynamics stated on LinkedIn that this was a difficult decision, "especially following the restructuring we underwent last year." The studio explained that team structures are continually reviewed to align with project development phases, adding, "Though we always strive to redeploy our staff into new roles whenever possible, unfortunately, we've reached a point where these dismissals are necessary." Crystal Dynamics is among several gaming companies, including Microsoft Gaming, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and Riot Games, that have collectively cut thousands of jobs. These layoffs reflect broader challenges within the industry, such as rising development costs, evolving player engagement models, and a more cautious investment environment. The studio announced previous job cuts on August 28, 2025. While Crystal Dynamics did not disclose the specific roles and departments affected, the cuts occurred within the development and central operations teams.

Staff Expansion at Crystal Dynamics Amidst Multiple Projects and Collaborations

The studio is currently developing a new Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider Catalyst, scheduled for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game will take Lara Croft to northern India following a mythical catastrophe. Crystal Dynamics is also partnering with Microsoft to develop the next Perfect Dark game. Additionally, in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog, they are developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original Tomb Raider, slated for release in 2026 on the same platforms. Crystal Dynamics concluded their statement by saying, "Today, however, our priority is supporting our colleagues moving forward."
