Hideo Kojima Embraces AI for Enhanced Gameplay Dynamics Rather Than Visual Art

Hideo Kojima told TweakTown that he is not interested in using AI to generate visual art for games, but he is interested in using AI to enhance gameplay depth by improving enemy reactions. Kojima believes that AI could help create smart enemies that respond to each player's individual actions. As he explained, "I'm more interested in employing AI in control systems. For instance, if you have 100 players, each would have their own habits, tendencies, sense of control, and movement style—all varying from person to person. By letting AI account for these differences, gameplay could gain more depth... using AI, enemy behavior could adapt based on the player's experience, actions, and patterns. This kind of dynamic response would allow for much deeper gameplay." Genki No X (formerly Twitter) highlighted Kojima's focus on AI for game systems: "Hideo Kojima is keen on using AI to manage game systems, focusing particularly on adjusting enemy actions based on the player's moves and strategies, rather than just for designing visuals or similar duties." CNN reported that Kojima shared these thoughts on AI tech during an interview with Oscar Rolland and Will Ripley at the Disney Asia Pacific Showcase in Hong Kong.

Hideo Kojima Advocates AI for Adaptive Gameplay Over Artistic Visual Replacement

Kojima believes AI could create characters that adapt to player-specific patterns, rather than just following scripted actions, without interfering with the creative process. He prefers AI to be behind the scenes rather than in the art department, as opposed to using models for autogenerating character ideas, textures, or environment assets. Given the recent debates about GenAI use at Larian Studios and Expedition 33, Kojima's emphasis on AI as a tool to enhance gameplay, rather than replace artistic creation, is particularly noteworthy. Kojima made it clear that he has no plans to use GenAI for game visuals but is intrigued by its possibilities in managing game controls to create more adaptive and engaging game experiences.
