AI-Driven Game Development Pioneered with Codex Mortis by Crunchfest

Indie game Codex Mortis is attracting attention because its creator, Grolaf, also known as Crunchfest, claims to have developed it entirely with AI in about three months. The artificial intelligence purportedly handled everything from code to graphics, music, and animations. Codex Mortis resembles Vampire Survivors in gameplay, but its AI-driven creation is what makes it unique. Rather than using Unity, Unreal, or another graphics engine, Grolaf built the game using TypeScript with web development tools, guided primarily by Claude Code. He generated the visuals using ChatGPT. After numerous attempts, some animations were replaced with simpler effects. Grolaf explained that the project began as an experiment to determine the feasibility of AI-driven game development. One of the biggest challenges was maintaining a consistent visual style. However, Grolaf suggests that the AI effectively learned and reapplied successful design elements throughout the project. He also noted that this method proved less tiring than traditional development, comparing it to having an exoskeleton. Reactions to the game have ranged from amusement at its appearance to criticism of AI's role in development. Some players have stated they don't support such projects, raising questions about why artificial intelligence causes such perplexity when applied to video games.

AI-Driven Codex Mortis Demo Available on Steam; Percival Brothers Announce Nintendo 3DS Release of Code Name S.T.E.A.M. 2

Codex Mortis currently offers a free demo on Steam, though an official release date has not been announced.
