Resident Evil Requiem’s Evolution from Open-World Multiplayer to Classic Survival Horror

Resident Evil: Requiem initially began as a multiplayer game, but the development team changed direction after determining that it didn’t deliver sufficient scares. According to producer Mato Kumazawa, the team decided to refocus on creating a classic single-player survival horror experience. Kumazawa told PressStart that some ideas from the original online, open-world concept remain in the current version, though he declined to specify which gameplay elements were retained. “Some stuff stuck around, but we’re not spilling the beans on what or how it works,” he said. The team enjoyed the open-world online experience, but they believed fans would prefer a single-player approach and therefore incorporated elements from the original design that they particularly liked. Kumazawa explained, “I think fans just want that classic survival horror with jump scares.” He added that the team felt that simply adding new skins and characters would not suffice. In development since 2019, Resident Evil: Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026.
