Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film have released the first trailer for the new Resident Evil film, set to premiere in cinemas on September 18, 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger, known for his work on Brutal Nights and The Hour of Lost Souls, the movie is described as a thrilling and terrifying reinvention of the franchise. The upcoming film introduces Bryan, a new protagonist portrayed by Austin Abrams. Unlike the hardened soldiers often featured in the series, Bryan is an ordinary gamer who would likely be overwhelmed if thrust into a real-life Resident Evil scenario. Cregger himself noted that Bryan is not a tough soldier with military training but an everyday gamer who would probably freak out in a Resident Evil game. Bryan’s character is tasked with an urgent delivery to Raccoon City Hospital, only to arrive as the city experiences the onset of a zombie outbreak.

The trailer showcases Bryan navigating dangerous situations, including attempting to contact his girlfriend from an abandoned house and evading monsters in a snowy landscape. The film’s official description reiterates its promise of a thrilling and terrifying reinvention. Cregger, a devoted fan of the Resident Evil saga, especially Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Revelations, teamed up with Shay Hatten to write the script. Abrams previously collaborated with Cregger on the 2025 film Weapons. The trailer hints at various terrifying encounters: highly coordinated undead reminiscent of Evil Dead, an obese zombie in the sewers, kamikaze zombies leaping from rooftops, and baby zombies. One character bears a striking resemblance to The Judge from Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian, and another creature is noted to resemble Baron Harkonnen from Dune. Despite an intended setting during the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the film operates within its own timeline. This is evident in visual cues like snow in Raccoon City, a departure from the games’ autumnal setting. Constantin Film produced and cofinanced the film, with producers including Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions.
