Ormund’s death differs from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. In the novel, Ormund is impaled numerous times before being burned. The series adaptation portrays Ormund being fatally stabbed by Roddy the Ruin, after which both are consumed by Ulf’s dragon. This ironic end comes as Ormund had previously underestimated Ulf, considering him an unworthy commoner. The showrunners took a bold approach to Ormund’s character, developing him beyond his description in the books as a “blank canvas character” due to limited original material. Consequently, the showrunners and writers decided to approach his role extensively rather than minimally. Despite his extreme views, particularly regarding the perceived impurity of Daeron Targaryen’s blood, the creators intentionally grounded Ormund’s fanaticism to ensure his portrayal was not one-dimensional, even with such a bold approach to this villainous figure. The production team dedicated significant time to the Tumbleton battle sequences, involving extensive stunt rehearsals and meticulous attention to blood effects and makeup. Crucial to this process was the precise execution of blood effects and makeup. The scene where Ormund dies alongside Roddy created an unexpected intimacy between the two actors. Norton described it as similar to finding bodies lying together in old graves.

Earlier in the finale, Ormund knighted Daeron before turning against him shortly after, resulting in their deaths without a final conversation between them. Norton believes Ormund would have respected, and perhaps even been proud of, Daeron’s independent decision to stand up, despite likely confronting him physically had they fought. For the character portrayal, keeping Ormund’s love for Daeron genuine was one of James Norton’s most important goals, as those feelings were real amidst his cruelty and villainous nature. The key aspect throughout Ormund’s journey was anchoring the character with that human element provided by his love for Daeron. This contrasted him as monstrous and callous, including his quick execution of a blacksmith in other scenes. Actress Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, humorously mentioned on the Happy Sad Confused podcast her desire to incorporate weapons into her costume due to demanding on-set requirements.
