Larian Unveils Epic Turn-Based RPG: Divinity's Gritty Return to the Silent Gods' Realm

Larian Studios is returning to its Divinity universe with a new turn-based RPG, promising a distinct experience for both newcomers and longtime fans. According to CEO Swen Vincke, this new Divinity installment will offer more variety and depth than any previous Larian title. The game, unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, is set in Rivellon—the fantasy world familiar to players of Divinity: Original Sin—and bears the tagline: "The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir." The cinematic trailer showcased a gritty world on the brink of being overrun by creatures from the netherworld, with striking visuals such as red lizardmen princes and elves feasting on severed arms. Vincke described the game's narrative as an "endless rope," hinting at its branching and complex storylines. A striking presentation accompanied the reveal, featuring a demonic statue in the desert.

Following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian considered developing another Dungeons & Dragons game with Wizards of the Coast. However, the studio ultimately chose to revisit the series that established Larian: Divinity. Vincke explained that the D\&D project lacked the team's enthusiasm. Instead, Larian chose to build upon the Divinity: Original Sin 2 storyline, creating a turn-based CRPG that aims to simplify and strengthen the Divinity universe narrative. Vincke emphasized that the new game will offer more freedom than any previous Larian title, thanks to a new version of Larian’s in-house engine. While Larian will reveal further details at a later time, the studio plans to emphasize cinematic narrative and use a combat system simpler than D\&D's complex rules. "We're doing things never seen before in RPGs," Vincke added, suggesting that players and journalists will have uniquely different experiences and stories to tell. In the meantime, fans can play an updated version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
