Shift Up CEO Hyungtae Kim Honored with Presidential Prize for Cultural-Industrial Growth and Success of Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory
Shift Up CEO Hyungtae Kim was awarded a presidential prize at the Korean Content Awards, recognizing his contributions to South Korea's cultural and industrial growth. The award acknowledges the impact of Stellar Blade, a PlayStation 5 exclusive that later released on PC, and Goddess of Victory: Nikke, a successful mobile game. The Korean Content Awards are presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. According to South Korean website Daum, Kim stated that the recognition reflects the work of the entire development team and the support of the players. Presidential decorations are among South Korea's most prestigious honors, acknowledging contributions that enhance the nation's competitiveness. Stellar Blade, which debuted in April 2024, sold over a million copies within two months of its PlayStation 5 release. The PC version also achieved success, selling over a million copies in three days and earning a 98% positive rating from Steam users. Shift Up's initial public offering generated 435 billion won (approximately $320 million) on its first day of trade, marking the largest haul for a gaming company since 2021. Stellar Blade also boasts the highest number of concurrent players among single-player PlayStation-published games on Steam.
South Korea's Rising Game Developers: Shift Up's Global Achievements with Stellar Blade and Project Spirits
Industry analysts often cite Shift Up as a prime example of South Korea's new wave of game development with global ambitions. The award recognizes Kim for boosting the global competitiveness of Korean game IPs since founding the company. NCSoft, another South Korean video game company known for titles like Lineage, Guild Wars, and Blade & Soul, received an award from the Ministry of Economy and Finance for its significant contributions to the country’s economy and its success in the international online gaming market. These awards highlight the video game industry's importance to South Korea's economy and the global success of local companies. Building on this success, Shift Up has several projects in the pipeline. The team behind Project Spirits, the successor to Stellar Blade, is partnering with Tencent to launch the game on PC, consoles, and smartphones. A Stellar Blade sequel is in development, with a planned release in the next few years, according to industry reports.
Stellar Blade's Global Success & Nikke's Billion-Dollar Revenue Boost Shift Up's Future
Commercially, Stellar Blade performed well on PlayStation 5 and PC, paving the way for the sequel. Goddess of Victory: Nikke has also achieved significant success, surpassing $1 billion in revenue through special events and collaborations with franchises like NieR: Automata, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Stellar Blade. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is rumored to be in development, but no official details have been released. While Shift Up has not provided new details about the future of the series, updates are anticipated given the success of the first game and the ongoing development of the sequel.
