Wachowskis Approached Kojima for Matrix Game in ’99, but Konami Declined, Leading to Other Developments

According to former Konami executive Christopher Bergstresser in a Time Extension interview, the Wachowskis—directors of The Matrix—once approached Hideo Kojima about developing a game based on their film. Bergstresser said that the Wachowskis, being admirers of Kojima’s work, contacted Konami headquarters and met with him on August 25, 1999, the day The Matrix premiered in Japan. Kazumi Kitaue, then CEO, Aki Saito, Bergstresser, and a conceptual artist were present. The Wachowskis proposed the idea of Kojima creating a Matrix game, but Kojima immediately declined, so Konami did not pursue the project. Bergstresser added, “But hey, we still got to enjoy the Japanese premiere of The Matrix and the party afterwards.” With Konami and Kojima unavailable, David Perry from Shiny Entertainment developed Enter The Matrix, which launched in 2003 alongside The Matrix Reloaded. Although the game sold over five million copies, critics gave it poor reviews. Warner Bros. later released The Matrix Online, an MMORPG that failed commercially in 2005. In late 2021, The Matrix Awakens was released as an Unreal Engine 5 tech demo.
