Mineiros, Goiás, Gains Public Channel with Inauguration of TV Unifimes

The municipality of Mineiros in Goias will launch a new television channel, TV Unifimes, this Friday, May 20. The local university center, Unifimes, initiated the project to expand access to information, culture, and education for residents in the state's interior, in partnership with the Brazil Communication Company (EBC). This morning's launch event included dignitaries such as Lidia Neves, EBC's Executive Manager of Contents Integration and Network; Marilaine de Sa Fernandes, Unifimes Vicerector; Vereador Helio Arantes, president of the Mineiros municipal council; and Ana Paula Abrao, Goias regional substitute manager at the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), among other federal, state, and municipal authorities. The inauguration of TV Unifimes is significant because it introduces public TV to an area that previously lacked it. "Everyone’s really excited about blending teaching, research, and outreach with public communication, and seeing what a TV can do," said Lidia Neves. Future plans include creating local content; currently, Mineiros produces no original shows.

Established in the 1980s as the Integrated Municipal Foundation for Higher Education (FIMES), the Centro Universitario de Mineiros has become a leading higher education institution in Goias, known for its diverse courses. Its main campus is in Mineiros, with another in Trindade city. "Forty-one years ago, the folks around here came together to start Fimes, which is now Unifimes base," said Vicerector Marilane Fernandes, representing Rektor Juliene Cunha. "After all these years, what could top that? Then we got TV," she added, celebrating the launch of TV Unifimes as a major milestone for the institution. The Brasil Digital program, coordinated by the Ministry of Communications and implemented with assistance from ANATEL and EBC, made this project possible. It allocated R$490,166 in federal funds to strengthen the National Public Communication Network (RNCP) in Brazil’s center-west region.

Enhanced Public Programming Reaches Over 70,000 in Mineiros and Nearby Communities with TV Unifimes Launch

The new TV signal from Unifimes, broadcasting on channel 4.1, is estimated to reach approximately 70,000 residents in Mineiros, Santa Rita do Araguaia, Portelandia, and Chapadao do Ceu. The channel will feature content from TV Brasil, with local programming to follow, aimed at promoting regional identity. With the launch of TV Unifimes, residents of these communities can look forward to enhanced access to quality public programming.
