Before his acting career, he achieved considerable success in martial arts, earning black belts in karate, Tang Soo Do, and taekwondo. It was during this time that he trained with Bruce Lee, who invited him to play the villain in The Flight of the Dragon (1972).

The Flight of the Dragon became a box office hit, launching Lee's international career and positioning Norris as a promising talent. He solidified his status as an action star with roles in Heavyweights (1977), where he played a truck driver searching for his missing brother, and The Good Guys Wear Black (1978), which he partially financed. His subsequent films included Breaker Breaker (1979), Lone Wolf McQuade (1980), Silent Rage (1982), Missing in Action (1984), Code of Silence (1985), Invasion U.S.A. In later years, he made special appearances, often playing himself, in productions such as Yes, Dear (2003), The Expendables 2 (2012), The Goldbergs (2015), and Hawaii Five-0 (2020).
