Four years have passed since the Battlefield license disappeared from the video game market, once an annual series that could rival Call of Duty. However, several setbacks and disappointing sales figures led to the franchise being put on hold. Nonetheless, Electronic Arts still envisions the potential return of their war-themed first-person shooter (FPS) and has begun discussing its future. The “behind-the-scenes development” video for the upcoming Battlefield (the borrowed name used for convenience) generated significant buzz with just 10 seconds of pre-alpha footage, leaving viewers quite skeptical.
This video primarily aims to explain that four studios are working full-time on the game with a very precise task distribution. DICE, which has historically been the lead studio for each Battlefield episode, is solely responsible for the multiplayer mode, while Criterion Games (the creators of the Burnout car game series) handles the single-player mode, keeping in mind that the English studio has traditionally supported the Battlefield franchise. EA Motive (formerly led by Jade Raymond before she left and handled the Dead Space remake in 2023) and Ripple Effect join as supporting studios, particularly for the multiplayer aspect. Together, they form the Battlefield Studios and initiate the Battlefield Labs program, a large-scale beta allowing players to try the game early and provide feedback to refine and release the game according to community desires. This approach seems to reflect Electronic Arts’ new commitment to listening to player input, as they cannot afford further missteps. Here’s hoping for their success.
