Last week marked the release of the first trailer for Gladiator 2, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s acclaimed film. The trailer generated significant media attention and was widely discussed, particularly on social networks. Given that it is a follow-up to one of the greatest action films of the past three decades and a notable entry in Ridley’s extensive filmography at age 86, expectations were understandably high. However, despite the Gladiator 2 trailer amassing over 15 million views within six days, it has also received one of the most negative receptions from audiences to date. With more than 350,000 dislikes compared to 149,000 likes, questions arise about what aspects of the trailer led to such widespread disapproval.
Gladiator 2 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of 2024, yet it is likely to face significant scrutiny from fans, despite being directed by Ridley Scott. Many view Ridley Scott as responsible for the decline of several of his franchises. Ridley Scott is a filmmaker known for creating critically acclaimed works such as Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, The Dark Knight’s Fall, American Gangster, State of Lies, while also producing less successful films like GI Jane, Cartel, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Lost City of Z, or House of Gucci (and we will not mention Napoleon, as I genuinely enjoyed the film). In short, it is clear that Ridley Scott’s career is marked by a prolific output and a willingness to take risks.
What criticisms are being directed at the Gladiator 2 trailer? Among over 31,000 comments, the most notable critique is the selection of music in this preview. Given that American rap interwoven with vocoder effects is featured in a gladiator-themed film, it was predictable that fans of the original would express dissatisfaction. The chosen song, “No Church in the Wild” by Jay Z and Kanye West, is over a decade old and conveys themes of confrontation but seems out of place in a film like Gladiator 2. This musical choice has been widely considered perplexing by many internet users who have not hesitated to voice their reactions under the video. Several comments elicited amusement, such as:
When rap started echoing, I thought Vin Diesel was about to arrive with his V8 in the arena.”
“Whoever put this song in the trailer should be sent into the arena with the lions.”
Jay-Z’s rap definitely transported me straight to 476 after JC!
It is difficult to disagree with the sentiment that Hans Zimmer was not chosen to compose the soundtrack for “Gladiator 2.” Instead, British composer Harry Gregson-Williams secured the role, having previously worked on films such as “Man on Fire,” “The Martian,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “House of Gucci,” and “The Last Duel” with Ridley Scott. Their familiarity with each other’s work suggests a well-understood collaboration. However, it raises questions why Jay Z and Kanye West’s track was selected for the trailer? This decision likely aims to capture the attention of American viewers in particular. Rap music is currently the most listened-to genre globally, especially in the United States, and its catchy beats are effective in movie trailers. Whether Ridley Scott made this choice or approved it remains uncertain. Given the film’s budget surpassing $310 million, failure at the box office cannot be an option. Therefore, the trailer exceeds three minutes to showcase the visual richness of the film from the outset—indeed, it is visually sumptuous and striking. These visuals also suggest a generous amount of action, sometimes excessive, such as scenes featuring a water-filled Colosseum with sharks, a warrior rhinoceros Ridley Scott wanted in the original film 24 years ago, gladiator battles, and more—enough to entice viewers to theaters.
The third and final point that has sparked considerable controversy regarding the Gladiator 2 trailer is the inclusion of Denzel Washington in the cast. There are two main reasons for this: first, he will portray Macrinus, who historically was not of African descent, which has led to discussions about “blackwashing.” Personally, I am not perturbed by Denzel’s involvement; he is a legendary actor and one of the greatest performers known today. However, I can appreciate why it may be contentious for some. Recently, while traveling from Paris to Los Angeles to play Star Wars Outlaws, I watched Equalizer 3 and found his performance to be outstanding as usual. Nevertheless, what concerns me somewhat more about the Gladiator 2 trailer and the few images available is that he appears to be reprising a role similar to one from Training Day. Many observers share this sentiment. It seems that in his portrayal, there are elements reminiscent of a real Los Angeles gangster rather than a formidable Roman emperor. While I have confidence in Denzel’s abilities as an actor who does not need to prove himself, it is important to ensure that the character remains true to the historical context and narrative.
What are your thoughts on the first trailer for Gladiator 2? Were you disappointed or are you as enthusiastic about it as before? Do you feel that the story appears to be a retread of the original film? It seems to function as both a reboot and a sequel, which is understandable given the 24-year gap between the two films and the need to attract multiple generations of viewers. The stakes for this film are significant; Ridley Scott has experienced box office failures in the past, so it’s clear that Paramount is banking on this movie to appeal to as many people as possible, even if it might upset others… Final verdict on November 13, 2024.
