Microsoft Had Already Decided to Sell Ninja Theory Before Announcing Senua
Microsoft's strategic sale of Ninja Theory, the studio behind Senua, following its announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase, aims to help the studio find a new home while showcasing their upcoming game to potential buyers.

Microsoft decided to sell Ninja Theory before unveiling its new game, Senua, at the Xbox Games Showcase ten days ago. This announcement, intended to project stability, occurred while Ninja Theory was reportedly among the first studios on Microsoft's list for potential sale or closure. Similar to Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory's future with Microsoft is uncertain. The unveiling of Senua, the next installment in the Hellblade series, at the Xbox Games Showcase on July 6th, appears to have been a strategic move to attract potential buyers. Ninja Theory aims for a 2027 release for the third game in the franchise. However, reports surfaced this week indicating Microsoft's actions against several studios, including potential closure or a managed buyout for Ninja Theory. According to Game File, citing journalist Stephen Totilo, Microsoft allegedly planned to close or spin off Ninja Theory around the time of the Senua announcement. This was reportedly done to generate investor interest in the studio. Totilo suggests that Ninja Theory's management may not have been aware of these plans, though Microsoft was apparently willing to facilitate an exit by allowing the studio to present its game to prospective buyers.
Uncertain Future for Xbox Studios Amid Ninja Theory Sale Rumors and Game Development Transition Risks
The timing of the Senua announcement has raised concerns for other Xbox-owned studios as well, including Compulsion Games, the developer of South of Midnight, and Double Fine Productions, known for the Psychonauts series. These studios, along with Ninja Theory, are reportedly facing potential shutdowns or sales. Ninja Theory currently employs 85 people, and Senua is in advanced development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a projected 2027 release date. This advanced stage and near-term revenue potential could be appealing to a new owner. While Microsoft reportedly prefers managed buyouts over outright closures for studios like Ninja Theory, transitioning a studio during active game development presents risks. It remains unclear whether Ninja Theory's administration was aware of the studio's situation before recent reports emerged. Xbox Game Pass is also set to lose several titles by the end of this month.
