Far Cry Series Will Not Adapt Any of the Games

FX is developing a television adaptation of the Far Cry video game franchise. The showrunner, Noah Hawley, confirmed in a recent interview with Deadline that the series will not be a direct adaptation of any specific game. Instead, the plot will be inspired by the stories told by the games. Hawley explained that the nature of video games, where players can skip cutscenes and focus on action, diminishes the importance of a linear story. He referred to this as “the death of narrative,” suggesting that the core gameplay loop of intense action, explosions, and map exploration often overshadows the plot. Consequently, characters like Vaas Montenegro and Pagan Min are unlikely to appear in the series. Hawley noted that the games typically feature a generic protagonist in an undefined setting, making a direct translation to television challenging. The Far Cry series will adopt an anthology format, with each season telling a self-contained story featuring different characters. This approach is similar to shows like Fargo, True Detective, and White Lotus.

In addition to Noah Hawley, who is known for his work on Fargo, Legion, and Alien: Earth, Rob McElhenney of Mythic Quest and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is also producing the series. McElhenney has been confirmed to appear as a character, though the role has not yet been specified. Filming for the Far Cry TV series is scheduled to take place at Pinewood Studios in London. An official release date for the Far Cry series has not yet been announced, and it is anticipated that it may still take a few years before its premiere on television or streaming platforms.
