Brazilian actress Gloria Menezes, a towering figure in Brazilian theater, cinema, and television, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the age of 91. She died at her home in Rio de Janeiro, as confirmed by her family. Her career, which spanned over six decades, left an indelible mark on the nation’s performing arts landscape. In 1959, she was recognized as Best New Actress at a festival organized by director Antunes Filho. Her professional acting career began in teleteatro on TV Tupi. Also in 1959, she secured her first telenovela role in Um Lugar ao Sol for Excelsior Television. It was during rehearsals for the play Feiticeiras de Salem that she met Tarcisio Meira. They later starred together in the 1960 film adaptation of the play, which premiered at Cannes and won the Golden Palm award. Menezes and Meira’s marriage lasted nearly sixty years until his passing in 2021. They shared the screen in the 1988 series Tarcisio e Gloria and starred together in the telenovela O Grito.
