EA Implements Layoffs in Battlefield 6 Team Following Game's Promising Start

Despite the strong launch of Battlefield 6, which outsold Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 the previous year and became the bestselling game of 2025 in the US with 7 million copies sold in three days, Electronic Arts (EA) is reducing its workforce across several of the game's development studios. EA is implementing these cuts, which it describes as a "team realignment" to better fit its continuous service model, affecting various positions and teams at Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios. While IGN reported on layoffs within the Battlefield teams last week, EA has not disclosed the number of affected employees. This news arrives amidst a series of other significant developments for both EA and the Battlefield franchise: EA delayed the release of Battlefield 6 Season 2 until February to incorporate community feedback, extending Season 1. The game saw a peak of over 96,000 concurrent players on Steam after the new season's launch. These layoffs follow previously reported workforce reductions at BioWare and Respawn Entertainment within the past year. The gaming industry has seen over 40,000 layoffs since 2022.

Layoffs in Battlefield Organization Amidst Player Decline and Acquisition-Driven Budget Cuts

Battlefield 6 has experienced a steady decline in players since its launch and now averages approximately 67,000 daily players on Steam. The free-to-play battle royale mode, Redsec, has received "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam. Lead development team member Vince Zampella died in a car accident in December. According to EA, "We’ve made point changes in our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what’s most important to our community. Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities, and we continue investing in the franchise, guided by player feedback and insights from Battlefield Labs." These budget cuts are linked to EA's acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, along with private equity firms Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. As part of the agreement, EA assumed $20 billion in debt, which has at least partially motivated these recent layoffs.
