Build A Rocket Boy CEO Mark Gerhard announced further layoffs this week after MindsEye failed to meet its sales targets. Gerhard maintains that the game’s failure was due to malicious activity targeting Barbara “Barb” Fiorentino, the game’s protagonist and inspiration, rather than marketing missteps or misreading the market. This narrative began in June of last year when two company executives resigned days before the game’s launch. At that time, Gerhard publicly claimed that negative criticism of MindsEye resulted from a conspiracy in which individuals were paid to denigrate the game and prevent Fiorentino from achieving success. Following a troubled launch in July of last year marked by technical issues, Gerhard addressed company employees to announce a relaunch plan, again attributing the problems to internal and external interference.

Gerhard cited the ongoing investigation into criminal activity during the game’s launch when announcing the latest layoffs on LinkedIn. While he did not specify the number of employees affected, he maintains that the investigation will reveal evidence of corporate espionage and sabotage. Gerhard accused YouTuber Cyber Boi of manipulating the media, spying, and causing trouble in January. He said the studio is working with outside partners and legal advisors on this probe and alleges they have proof of undercover spying and corporate damage intended to undermine the game. Gerhard warned employees he would pursue the matter in court but did not present any specific evidence. MindsEye was intended to be the first game in the Everywhere project, described as a “Roblox for adults” developed by Leslie Benzies, one of the creators of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
