Highguard Director Reveals Game Launched Unfinished Due to Lack of Funds and Time

Despite an impressive start, Highguard's untimely closure is a reminder of the challenges facing live-service games in today's competitive industry landscape.

Wildlight Entertainment, a studio founded by industry veterans known for Apex Legends and Call of Duty, launched their free-to-play hero shooter Highguard on January 26, 2026. However, the game's servers will shut down permanently on March 12, 2026, marking a short lifespan for the title. Chad Grenier, studio head and former Apex Legends producer, explained that Highguard was released in an unfinished state due to financial constraints and a lack of time, which ultimately led to its demise. In a statement on March 3, 2026, Grenier said, "When you don't have time or money, you have to release the game with the runway you have available and hope players will stick with you post-launch." [Source: ChadGrenier's X post. The final update, scheduled for March 12, will include a new hero (the Warden), a new weapon, account-wide progression, and hero skill trees.

Game's Demise in Live-Service Market: Highguard Struggles Amidst Competition, Declining Players, and Financial Pressures

Grenier clarified that maintaining the game was not financially viable, stating, "There isn't enough revenue to keep anyone employed working on it, unfortunately." Despite the shutdown, the remaining team members were committed to releasing one last update for the active players. Highguard, unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, combines hero shooter and MOBA strategy elements. The community negatively nicknamed it "Concord 2.0," a reference to the controversial trailer for the game Concord at The Game Awards 2025. Even with the introduction of a new 5v5 raid mode, retaining players proved difficult. Simultaneous player counts dropped from a peak of over 97,000 to roughly 300 by the shutdown announcement. Funding from Tencent, one of Wildlight's investors, was reportedly withdrawn due to the declining player base. Ultimately, Highguard's failure appears to stem from a combination of factors, including a competitive live-service market, difficulties in sustaining a consistent player base, marketing missteps, and financial pressures. The game joins a growing list of live-service game failures, prompting questions about the increasing challenges within the industry.
