PlayStation 2 Turns 26

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) turns 26 today, marking the anniversary of its release on March 4, 2000. The PS2 remains the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 160 million units sold worldwide. Available in Brazil since late 2009, the PS2 continues to be a leading gaming platform globally, despite the improved graphics of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the innovative Nintendo Wii. Launched internationally in 2000, the PS2 has sold approximately 160 million units. The original PS2 console is similar in size to the PlayStation 3, but slightly thinner. The slim version, sold in Brazil, halves both the original's thickness and height.

PlayStation 2's Diverse Game Library and Lasting Impact on Gaming Landscape

The PS2 boasts an impressive variety of games. Racing fans could burn rubber in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, while Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas delivered a chaotic and expansive open world. The console also featured sports games, survival horror, platformers, rhythm games, and numerous Japanese RPGs, often released in the same year. This diversity allowed players to explore different genres. Music fans could experience Guitar Hero, from the earliest versions to later iterations, using guitar-shaped controllers connected via infrared or cable. Fighting game fans could enjoy franchises like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Winning Eleven. The original PlayStation, introduced to North America in 1995, revolutionized gaming with its 3D graphics and groundbreaking titles such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil. Its CD-based format enabled more complex games thanks to increased storage capacity; for example, Metal Gear Solid featured extended animations and a deep espionage plot. This innovation paved the way for the PS2's success. Please note that this text does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Portal Uai. The PlayStation 2's enduring popularity reflects its lasting impact on the gaming landscape.
