Mega Man 8's 29th Anniversary on Sega Saturn and PlayStation
On January 17, 2026, it will have been 29 years since Mega Man 8 debuted on the Sega Saturn in Japan. The action-platformer, known as Rockman 8: Metal Heroes in Japan, was developed and published by Capcom in 1997. The eighth installment in the Mega Man series initially appeared on PlayStation in Japan in 1996 and was released a year later on Sega Saturn and PlayStation in North America and PAL regions, marking the first time a Mega Man game was available on 32-bit consoles. Hayato Kaji directed the game, and Keiji Inafune produced it; both had previously worked as artists on the series. In Mega Man 8, Mega Man must investigate an energy reading from a meteor crash on an island and discovers that Dr. Wily has absconded with the energy source. Mega Man must stop Wily from using the energy for an evil scheme and uncover what an alien robot was doing at the crash site.
