After Metal Slug Tactics' Commercial Flop, French Studio Leikir Hands in Notice

Collapse of Leikir Studio Post-Metal Slug Tactics Release Marks End to Creative Partnership with Pullup Entertainment

Pullup Entertainment announced the closure of Paris-based developer Leikir Studio during its quarterly results announcement, four years after the two companies began collaborating on Metal Slug Tactics. The news attracted little attention, as the game had generated minimal interest from players and the press and was released without significant promotion. Leikir Studio was acquired in early 2022, when Pullup Entertainment was still known as Focus Home Interactive, and joined Pullup's expanding team intending to enhance its creative capabilities. At the time of the acquisition, the Ivry-sur-Seine studio consisted of approximately twenty employees and was already developing Metal Slug Tactics, a tactical reimagining of the classic game. Initially slated for release in 2022, the game was eventually launched in November 2024, receiving generally favorable reviews but achieving underwhelming sales. Prior to its acquisition, Leikir Studio developed titles such as Isbarah and Wondershot, partnered with Nacon on Rogue Lords, and released Synergy with Goblinz. These releases demonstrated a consistent output, even if they sometimes diverged from mainstream video game trends.

Decline in Pullup Revenue Compared to Strong Prior Year, Despite Record Breaking Performers Absolum and Marvel Cosmic Invasion

While Pullup Entertainment anticipates a record-breaking year in 2025-2026, sales decreased compared to last year's exceptional performance. Third-quarter revenue reached €64.8 million, a 36% decrease from the previous year, while revenue for the first nine months totaled €197.4 million, a 41% decrease compared to the same period last year, which had been significantly boosted by Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The company previously generated €194.1 million in revenue during the same period. Therefore, the decline reflects a comparison against a particularly strong prior year, rather than fundamental issues within the company. In the third quarter, revenue from new game releases reached €20.1 million, driven by titles such as Absolum and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, along with continued sales of RoadCraft and Train Sim World 6. Older titles particularly stood out, increasing 41% this quarter and reaching a record €137.1 million over nine months—a 43% increase compared to last year. These established games now account for 69% of Pullup's total revenue, reflecting the company's emphasis on long-term earnings and sustained player engagement.

Decline in Leikir Studio Amidst Organizational Shifts and Focus on Larger Projects at Pullup Entertainment

Pullup Entertainment's statement on Boursorama attributed Leikir Studio's closure to routine organizational adjustments and a focus on larger projects, with no specific mention of Metal Slug Tactics or the development team involved. This event underscores the vulnerability of studios, even those affiliated with larger organizations like Pullup. In this instance, the risk of innovating on established franchises by transforming Metal Slug into a tactical RPG ultimately proved unsuccessful.
