Final Fantasy IX: A Nostalgic Tribute to Classic RPG Fans
Final Fantasy IX, the ninth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, has sold over 9.3 million units worldwide. Developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) as a PlayStation exclusive, Final Fantasy IX centers on a war between nations. Players follow Zidane Tribal, a young thief who joins a group to defeat Queen Brahne, a primary instigator of the conflict. They later discover that Brahne is working with a more dangerous figure named Kuja. Square developed Final Fantasy IX alongside Final Fantasy VIII but adopted a more traditional style reminiscent of the series' earlier titles. Initially, the developers did not include Final Fantasy IX within the official Final Fantasy timeline. According to IGN, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the series creator and then-producer, wanted to create a retro game as a tribute to longtime fans, which drove the game's production. The development team had been concerned about potential negative reactions to the game's nostalgic style, as the series had significantly expanded its player base during the PlayStation era with games set in more technologically advanced eras and featuring more human characters.
Nostalgia's Edge vs Modern Sales: Final Fantasy's Changing Landscape
By June 2025, the Final Fantasy franchise had sold 203 million units worldwide. However, recent titles like Final Fantasy XVI and FFVII Rebirth did not perform as strongly as Square Enix had hoped. Final Fantasy XVI, launched in June 2023, sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide, with 3 million units sold within its first six days. Despite this initial success, sales did not remain consistent, and ultimately, neither Final Fantasy XVI nor FFVII Rebirth reached the company's anticipated sales targets. In contrast, Final Fantasy XV set a record with 5 million day-one shipments, and the original FFVII Remake sold over 3.5 million copies in its first three days. The PC release of FFVII Rebirth reached a peak of 40,500 concurrent players on Steam, marking it as the largest Final Fantasy title on the platform based on that metric. These sales figures reflect the video game market's ongoing evolution, with a growing interest in mobile gaming, the integration of AI in game development and marketing, and the continued popularity of RPGs on streaming platforms, along with the expansion of subscription services.
