Kojima's Enigmatic OD: Challenging Norms and a Difficult Journey to Success
Hideo Kojima has returned to discuss OD, the enigmatic horror game he is developing for Xbox, but his descriptions continue to raise more questions than answers. In a new interview with the Japanese website ananweb, the creator of Death Stranding admitted that he still cannot fully articulate what OD will be, stating that he is unsure if it will even work. Kojima explained that while his previous games, such as Metal Gear and Death Stranding, differed, they still utilized systems familiar to players. OD, however, is different. According to Automaton Media's report on the interview, Kojima anticipates that this departure from established norms may make success difficult to achieve. He added that the studio is attempting to reinvent the service model from scratch, a difficult undertaking.
Kojima's Radical OD: A Game-Film Hybrid Revolutionizing Horror?
Kojima says OD resembles a typical horror game, but also insists it is unlike any other. The game is being built using a combination of the Silent Hill engine and Unreal Engine 5. Fans have observed similarities between the OD trailer and the Silent Hill series, suggesting the use of the Silent Hill engine, while the Knock trailer offers a glimpse into the game's mechanics. These elements have led some to speculate that OD could revolutionize the horror genre. Despite the ambiguity surrounding the project, Kojima claims that the latest trailer is full of clues, and that attentive viewers can begin to grasp the game's overall concept. First announced in 2023, OD remains largely a mystery. The project is known to involve creative collaboration with Jordan Peele, known for his psychological horror films Get Out and Nope. Kojima describes the project as a game, a film, and a new form of communication, suggesting a radical departure from established forms. Despite these intriguing hints, Kojima has stated that he is unconcerned that many people may dislike OD upon release.
