Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal - An Enjoyable Musou or Not?

Experience an engaging, musou-style adventure in Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal on Nintendo Switch 2, with a light RPG system, synchronized attacks, and new playable characters for enhanced variety – despite some persisting technical issues and a contrasting visual style compared to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Hyrule Warriors: Seal Chronicles Switch Upgrade - Musou Action Awaits

Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal, the third installment in the series that began on the Wii U in 2014, is poised to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. The 2020 Nintendo Switch version faced fluidity issues due to its ambitious scope, but the enhanced capabilities of the new console should provide a more seamless experience. It remains to be seen whether this upgrade enhances the Hyrule Warriors experience. Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal is not a typical Zelda game but rather a musou-style title. Similar to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, released five years earlier, players fight through semi-open levels, systematically eliminating threats by chaining combos and triggering special attacks for significant damage, in the vein of Dynasty Warriors. A unique feature allows players to launch synchronized attacks with nearby characters; each pairing boasts unique moves, some of which grant temporary bonuses.

Hyrule Warriors: Seal Chronicles - Wave-Based Action and French Dubbing

Each character also has their own fighting style. While the game incorporates a light RPG system, allowing players to earn experience, level up, and unlock skills, as well as customize their loadouts with usable combat items, its primary focus remains wave-based combat against hordes of enemies. The game aims to fill in gaps in the official Zelda timeline and shed light on Princess Zelda’s time travel in Tears of the Kingdom. It also features cinematic sequences with full French dubbing. In Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal, players clear enemy waves, level up, and execute synchronized attacks. While similar to The Era of Calamity, it offers unique elements, including well-executed French dubbing in the cinematic sequences between battles.

Exploring Hyrule's Map in Tears of the Kingdom - Streamlined Musou Gameplay with Shoot 'em Up Episodes

However, the game's progression may feel somewhat dated, following a formula of advancing from point A, wiping out enemies, and defeating a boss to unlock point B. While tasks such as capturing outposts or protecting NPCs are included, the core structure remains consistent with The Age of Calamity but feels more streamlined. The Hyrule map acts as a hub, connecting surface, underground, and sky areas to Tears of the Kingdom. From this hub, players can engage in main missions (15–20 minutes each) and side quests (quick, 5-minute tasks for resources), upgrade gear, and learn new skills. Some levels incorporate shoot 'em up sections where characters transform into flying devices, providing a break from the standard hack-and-slash gameplay.

Hyrule Warriors: Zelda's Lead in the Chronicles of the Seal - Diverse Cast and Co-op Gameplay

Hyrule Warriors: The Chronicles of the Seal offers a diverse cast of playable characters, a common feature in games like this and Dynasty Warriors. With Link absent, Zelda takes the lead, employing her magical powers on the battlefield. While she may not be the most exciting character to control, players can switch between characters mid-action using the D-pad. Players will meet characters such as Gorons, Zoras, and Rito, each of whom brings new moves, combos, and fighting styles. The game features two-player co-op, both locally and online via split-screen, with a reduced difficulty level. However, the second player is sometimes limited to watching, which may be disappointing. Some players might find the game's technical aspects underwhelming.
