AI Integral to Games, Labeling Meaningless Says Epic CEO
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has questioned the value of digital storefronts labeling games based on their use of artificial intelligence (AI) in development. He anticipates that AI will become so integral to video game creation that such warnings would quickly become meaningless. Sweeney suggested that AI labeling might be appropriate in contexts like art exhibitions, where distinguishing between human and machine-generated content is important. However, he argues that in a gaming store, where AI will likely be ubiquitous, such distinctions are inconsequential. Responding to the argument that players deserve to know whether AI was used, Sweeney jokingly said that consumers might soon demand disclosure of the shampoo brands developers use. In essence, he believes the issue is being overcomplicated.
AI Disclosure Debate: Epic Games Store Avoids AI Labeling Policies
His comments come amid growing debate about the ethical and practical implications of AI in game development. While some companies are embracing AI—the Epic Games Store acknowledges using AI tools in the development of games like ARC Raiders and Black Ops 7, and Elon Musk's xAI is developing an AI game and movie—other studios are taking a different approach. Palworld, for example, does not plan to use AI, Obsidian Entertainment is sticking with humanmade RPGs, turning down generative AI and Dispatchs creative director believes creativity cant be solved by AI. Currently, Steam mandates that studios disclose any use of generative AI in their games, with a dedicated section on each game's page. The Epic Games Store, however, does not have similar disclosures, and based on Sweeney's statements, is unlikely to implement them.
