New FSR 4 Version May Give Advantage to Xbox... And Leave PS5 Behind

AMD's new FSR 4 INT8 delivers potentially sharper images in specific scenarios, particularly on Xbox Series X, offering a trade-off between image quality and performance compared to other upscaling technologies.

Enhanced FSR 4 on Xbox Series X Offers Sharper Image and Boost in Alan Wake 2, Lacks Widespread Support Due to PS5 Incompatibility

AMD is developing a new version of FSR 4, which utilizes INT8 instead of FP8, with the goal of enhancing performance on older GPUs. Digital Foundry conducted tests on the Xbox Series X, reporting that FSR 4 INT8 generally delivers a sharper image compared to FSR 3. However, FSR 4 INT8 does not match the performance of other upscaling solutions like FSR 3 or Intel XeSS. For instance, in Performance mode at 4K resolution, FSR 4 INT8 provided approximately a 28% performance boost, while FSR 3 achieved 29%. Despite this, FSR 4 INT8 demonstrated notable advantages in specific scenarios. Tests with Alan Wake 2 at 1440p showed that FSR 4 INT8 yielded approximately 4 more frames per second and a sharper image when compared to FSR 2 in Balance mode. This suggests the INT8 version could be beneficial for certain games on the Xbox Series X, given its support for this format. A potential limitation for widespread adoption is that many multiplatform games are unlikely to implement FSR 4 INT8, as the PlayStation 5 does not support this format. Furthermore, AMD is still actively working on improving the technology, meaning final performance metrics and image quality are subject to change.

Sharper Images on Xbox Series X with FSR 4 INT8, Performance Limitations Apply

In conclusion, while FSR 4 INT8 has some performance limitations, it offers the potential for sharper images in select titles on the Xbox Series X.
