This news indicates a shift from Todd Howard’s previous hints that Fallout 5 development would await further progress on The Elder Scrolls. The specific development team for Fallout 5 is currently being assembled, as Bethesda’s main studios remain occupied with Starfield’s post-launch updates and the ongoing development of The Elder Scrolls VI. Obsidian Entertainment is not involved in Fallout 5. Instead, reports indicate a new team is forming with a long-term focus, potentially including developers from ZeniMax’s canceled massively multiplayer online (MMO) project or other studios within Microsoft’s network. This development follows Microsoft’s recent layoffs, which impacted ZeniMax Online, the studio behind the “Project Blackbird” MMO. Project Blackbird, which had been in development for some time, was ultimately canceled by Microsoft. Corden explained that Fallout 5 received official internal approval at Bethesda Game Studios as part of a reorganization of priorities within Microsoft’s group, following Project Blackbird’s cancellation. This indicates that resources originally intended for the canceled MMO are now being funneled into the Fallout franchise.

This news arrives approximately ten years after the last major Fallout installment (excluding Fallout 76). Fallout 5 is now officially in active development, a strategic move by Microsoft that necessitated the abandonment of another project.
