Empowering Justice Online: Enforcing Law Lola Against Digital Harassment
Amid a surge in femicides and online attacks against women, the Brazilian Federal Police are actively enforcing Law No. 13,642/2018. Known as "Law Lola" after its creator, former Fortaleza mayor Luizianne Lins, this legislation empowers the Federal Police to investigate online hate crimes. In February, in one example of the law's impact, the Federal Police collaborated with Europol to arrest three individuals linked to international networks that shared videos depicting the sexual abuse of drugged women. Search warrants were executed at seven locations across five states. In March, coinciding with Women's History Month, the Federal Police are also investigating the "If She Says No" trend on social media, which promotes violence against women. Law Lola was spurred by the experiences of Professor Lola Aronovich at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). After enduring years of misogynistic online harassment, Aronovich had to navigate multiple institutions before her case was taken seriously and the offenders were brought to justice. The law aims to prevent others from facing similar hurdles.
