Producer Hidden Denuvo in Crimson Desert Until Last Minute, Sparking Outrage

As the release of Crimson Desert nears, players are divided over the inclusion of Denuvo Anti-Tamper protection in the PC version, with concerns about its impact on performance and frame rates.

Pearl Abyss's action-adventure game, Crimson Desert, is scheduled to launch on March 19 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the launch was overshadowed by controversy among PC pre-order customers: Pearl Abyss added Denuvo Anti-Tamper protection to the PC version without prior notification. Players discovered this change on March 12 via SteamDB, which showed an update to Crimson Desert's Steam page: "Added third-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper, with activation limit of 5 different PCs per day." The integration of Denuvo, known for reducing performance and frame rates in PC games, sparked immediate backlash from PC gamers who had already pre-purchased the title. Discussions on the Steam community forums reveal divided opinions. Many express concern that Denuvo will negatively impact performance and consider it detrimental to PC gaming. Others are indifferent to the DRM. Some even speculate that Denuvo might contribute to the game's smooth performance on certain systems. The official Steam forums highlight dissatisfaction, exemplified by a popular thread titled "Denuvo - instant and aggressive pre-order cancellation." Numerous players have canceled their pre-orders, criticizing Pearl Abyss for investing in a technology they deem ineffective against piracy.

Controversial Denuvo in Crimson Desert: Mixed Player Reactions and Looming Performance Concerns

Conversely, some players defend Pearl Abyss's decision, accusing detractors of being disgruntled pirates, while others maintain that the DRM will not affect their purchase decision. A separate group stated that Denuvo's inclusion does not impact their decision to buy the game. With the launch imminent, it remains to be seen whether Denuvo's implementation in Crimson Desert will negatively impact the PC version's technical performance.
