Dune: Part Three – Embracing Paul’s Imperial Reign in Arrakis Continues

Production has begun on Dune: Part Three in Budapest, marking director Denis Villeneuve’s return to the world of Arrakis. The film, which adapts Frank Herbert’s second novel, Dune Messiah, is titled Dune: Part Three. Warner Bros. and Legendary confirmed the numerical title, opting not to use the book’s subtitle, to maintain consistency with its predecessors. The new feature continues the story from the conclusion of Dune: Part Two, following Paul Atreides in his new role as Emperor. The adaptation aims to explore the political and personal repercussions of his leadership. Villeneuve has indicated plans to expand beyond the material of Dune Messiah, potentially incorporating elements from Children of Dune, the third book in the saga. This is further suggested by the confirmed casting of Paul and Chani’s children, Leto II and Ghanima, which hints at a significant time jump within the narrative. Denis Villeneuve has previously clarified his vision for the saga, stating that his next Dune film does not conclude a traditional trilogy. Instead, he views the first two movies as a single, complete story arc, effectively one film split into two parts.

Filming is underway at Origo Studios in Hungary. Zendaya was among the first cast members to begin shooting in Budapest. Timothée Chalamet, who was recently seen in St. Tropez, France, with Kylie Jenner, appeared to have shaved his head, potentially in preparation for his return to Arrakis. As of his sighting, his return to set for filming was unconfirmed. The confirmed returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho (reprising his role after being absent from Dune: Part Two), and Florence Pugh, among other previous cast members. New additions to the cast include NakoaWolf Momoa as Leto II and Ida Brooke as Ghanima. Robert Pattinson is rumored for the role of Scytale, though no official confirmation has been made. Visually, Villeneuve will continue to utilize the IMAX format for select scenes. However, contrary to some earlier statements, including remarks made by Richard Gelfond, the film will not be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Consistent with previous installments, the production will combine IMAX sequences with traditional filming to maintain the saga’s distinctive visual scale.
