Highguard and the Bubble Burst: How a Hero Shooter Died in an Instant
The closure of Highguard serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by modern gaming projects, underlining the pressure for instant success and the need for community support and understanding in overcoming them.

On March 12th, the Highguard servers will be shut down permanently, relegating the game to a footnote in video game history. While the end of any online game is a somber occasion, Highguard's fate serves as a stark warning about the current state of the industry and its communities—especially considering that it was a highlight at The Game Awards just weeks before its release. The game's rapid demise can be attributed to market saturation, corporate impatience, and increasing negativity within the gaming community. Highguard, a live-service raid shooter developed by a team of ex-EA developers, was introduced by Geoff Keighley at The Game Awards 2025. However, its reveal trailer was poorly received, quickly leading to an "Overwhelmingly Negative" rating on Steam. Despite attracting over 97,000 players on launch night, Highguard struggled to maintain a daily player count above 1,000 on Steam four weeks later. This drop in player numbers resulted in long queue times, uneven matches, and a lackluster game economy. Citing disappointing launch figures, Chinese tech giant Tencent withdrew funding, leading to staff layoffs and the ultimate shutdown of the game.
The initial trailer proved fatal for Highguard. The art direction was deemed generic, and the game was prematurely labeled a failure on social media. This raises the question of how much community negativity influences a game's failure. Online discourse can create a self-fulfilling prophecy, where negative sentiment discourages many players from even trying a game due to the perceived social stigma. Highguard suffered from this prejudgment, and the constant negativity surrounding the project stifled any chance of redemption. Highguard's struggles are symptomatic of a wider trend. Several other live-service games, such as Concord, have launched with significant marketing efforts only to be shuttered due to lack of originality and low player numbers. However, community perception is not solely to blame. Highguard also lacked the quality needed to compete. Despite a strong initial player count, the game was plagued by negative reviews citing severe performance issues and unstable servers. Releasing a generic hero shooter with technical problems in a saturated market proved self-sabotaging. This was compounded by a game design that overemphasized competitiveness, alienating casual players.
When player counts declined, investors quickly withdrew funding. Industry sources indicate that Tencent, the project's secret backer, cut support following the negative launch. Without funds to maintain its infrastructure, the studio was forced to shut down the servers after just over a month. Unlike earlier instances where games with disastrous launches were given time and funding for improvement (e.g., No Man's Sky or Cyberpunk 2077), today's market demands immediate success. The pressure and scrutiny extend beyond smaller studios, as seen with Bungie's Marathon. The community's intense focus on the game is evident in Bungie's swift response to player feedback, such as lowering the difficulty of bot UESC and increasing the availability of health and ammo. Bungie's actions reflect an awareness that players in 2026 have little patience and are quick to abandon a game and voice their discontent online.
Live-Service Struggles: Highguard's Swift Demise and Future Uncertainties in Gaming
Highguard's fate symbolizes the challenges facing the live-service game model, resulting from studios chasing trends and a community often quick to condemn new releases. Highguard's shutdown, just 49 days after its launch and despite positive feedback and new content, highlights the difficulty of establishing a stable player base. As Highguard disappears, it remains to be seen whether Marathon and other future titles can thrive in this demanding environment.
