Project Hail Mary Already Has a Score on Rotten Tomatoes and Surpasses The Martian and Interstellar

Ten days before its theatrical release, the review embargo lifted for Project Hail Mary, confirming that Amazon MGM Studios' latest science fiction venture is a success with specialized press. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and based on the work of Andy Weir, the film stars Ryan Gosling as the lead and is drawing considerable acclaim. With approximately 70 reviews tallied, Project Hail Mary currently boasts a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing Weir's previous major film adaptation, The Martian (91% in 2015). According to critic reviews, this represents the highest-rated film of Gosling's career, exceeding scores for Drive (93%), Half Nelson (91%), and Barbie (88%). Drew Goddard, who received an Oscar nomination for his adaptation of The Martian, wrote the screenplay for Project Hail Mary.

The story centers on Ryland Grace (Gosling), a science teacher who awakens alone in space and must save Earth from a deadly algae consuming the sun. While the film has garnered mostly positive reviews, some critics have offered dissenting opinions. Brian Eggert of Deep Focus Review argues that the adaptation caters to "America's anti-intellectualism trend" and lacks the scientific rigor of The Martian. Lady Jenevia, also writing for Deep Focus Review, suggests that some negative reactions arise from the film's departure from the original novel's intricate scientific worldbuilding, in favor of immature humor that diminishes the apocalyptic stakes. Many reviews have praised the emotional core of the film: the friendship between Grace and an alien named Rocky. Unlike many major Hollywood productions, Rocky was created using practical effects and puppetry, a choice that has been widely lauded. Screen Rant also published a review of Project Hail Mary. Despite the overwhelmingly positive initial reactions, some critics point to tonal inconsistencies and a drawn-out conclusion. However, the consensus is that the film offers a visually stunning spectacle, best experienced in IMAX format. An audience score is not yet available.
