On PlayStation 5, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach saw part of its creation handed off to none other than Nintendo, as shown in the game’s credits. The team-up between Kojima Productions and Nintendo happened through Nintendo Pictures, a Tokyo-based studio specializing in animation, computer graphics, and motion capture. Nintendo got their hands on Nintendo Pictures (formerly Dynamo Pictures) back in 2022, with plans to create visual content using Nintendo’s IP. But even though it’s part of the Nintendo family, the studio kept its independence, taking on third-party projects—including video games. You might recall they did motion capture for the original Death Stranding. They also worked on CG scenes in Metroid: Other M, teamed up with Shigeru Miyamoto to create Pikmin shorts for Wii U and 3DS, and handled animations for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG, and Another Code: Recollection.

Microsoft’s about to slice more jobs from its Xbox division next week, also planning to pull the plug on its brand in some European areas. This move includes a mass layoff at Xbox by the end of this month, along with restructuring their distribution business in Central Europe, as they gear up for the next gen Xbox. This recent round of job cuts comes just about a month after Microsoft announced letting go over 6,000 employees, adding to the 300+ who were let go earlier in June. This year, the company’s also shut down game development studios like Tango Gameworks (Ghostwire Tokyo) and Arkane Austin (Redfall).
Released on May 13th, The Precinct didn’t initially receive favorable reviews, but it gradually established itself as a video game oddity, an urban sandbox with a retro-futuristic look, blending police chases and neon-black aesthetics. This week, the game is getting a new update, adding more than just additional content; it signals a desire to revisit its proposal and correct what didn’t work at launch, with the primary addition being Solo Mode. Presented as a mode where agent Nick Cordell Jr. patrols without a partner, it might initially seem like an inconsequential variation, but in reality, it’s a disguised correction of a structural flaw: the AI ally system, deemed unhelpful or obstructive by some players during intervention phases. By focusing the experience on the lone player facing Averno’s criminality, the studio aims to return to a more controlled and fluid form of immersion.
This update also includes vehicle and protagonist customization. The six patrol cars now benefit from five new liveries each, while the playable avatar can don ten outfits, eight hats, and four types of glasses. The update will be available later this week and during the Steam Summer Sale starting June 26th. By redirecting gameplay around the player and adding identity projection tools, this update demonstrates that the studio listens, adjusts, and cautiously advances. The lone player finally becomes the sole engine of their narrative, strengthening the sense of embodiment. This focus on what works: the free-roam patrol experience, observing urban rhythms, and improvising interventions, returns us to a more controlled and fluid form of immersion. The Precinct integrates the Steam Summer Sale starting June 26th and benefits from a promotion on the PlayStation Store until July 2nd.

Some exciting news for all you Hellblade fans! After loads of rumors, we finally have the official drop date for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 on the PS5. Mark your calendars for August 12th, that’s when it hits Sony’s console. But here’s the twist – it ain’t just the regular version hitting stores in ’24, oh no! This one’s an enhanced edition with extra goodies not found in the original game. One such treat is a “performance mode.” While the first game was stuck at 30fps for a more cinematic feel, this upgrade will offer a performance mode that drops graphics to ensure a silky-smooth 60fps. Another cool addition is the “Dark Rot Mode,” inspired by the first game’s “life” mechanic. Each flub by the protagonist causes her body to spread the “dark rot” disease, and once it hits her head – that’s game over. This edition also boasts an improved photo mode with more options and video recording capabilities, plus four hours of behind-the-scenes commentary on the game’s creation. And here’s the best part – this enhanced version of Hellblade 2 won’t be exclusive to the PS5. On August 12th, Xbox Series and PC gamers who already own the game can upgrade for free to access all the improvements. PC owners will also score a new “Very High” graphics mode for even better visuals on advanced configurations. Enjoy!
