Valve's Steam Machine to be Sold at €1,040 Without Controller and With Minuscule Storage

The Steam Machine, priced between €1,039 and €1,428, offers a living room PC experience optimized for Steam's vast catalog, with technical challenges ahead as it bridges the gap between two distinct markets.

The Steam Machine's pricing has been revealed, with the base model starting at $1,039 without a controller. The fully equipped version will cost up to $1,428. Valve positions the Steam Machine as a compact living room PC, not a direct competitor to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. At launch, four configurations will be available: 512GB storage (no controller): $1,039 512GB storage with Steam Controller: $1,108 2TB storage (no controller): $1,359 2TB storage with Steam Controller: $1,428 Valve states that the pricing reflects market conditions rather than an attempt to appear premium. The company originally hoped to sell the Steam Machine for approximately $750, but rising RAM and SSD costs influenced the final price. At over $1,000, the Steam Machine is significantly more expensive than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which retail for less than half its price. Furthermore, a similarly performing gaming PC with greater upgrade potential can be built for a comparable cost.

Early technical assessments indicate the Steam Machine will feature an AMD Navi 33 GPU, delivering performance between the Radeon RX 6600 and RX 7600. This GPU is capable of running current games, though it does not surpass existing console performance. Initial testing showed that achieving optimal performance for titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Black Myth: Wukong sometimes required lowering the resolution to match that of a standard PS5. Given the base model's price exceeding $1,000, consumers may question its value compared to consoles offering similar performance at a lower cost. Valve anticipates limited initial stock for the Steam Machine and will implement a registration system similar to that used for the Steam Controller. Orders will not be taken directly; interested buyers must register by June 25 at 7 PM. Following this period, Valve will distribute available units via email invitations to selected registrants, allowing them to complete their purchase. Those not selected will be placed on a waiting list for future restocks. This system aims to prevent scalping and subsequent price inflation on the secondary market.

High-Priced Steam Machine Launches June 29, Potential Game Changer for Console Market

The Steam Machine is expected to ship as early as June 29, offering relatively quick availability to early buyers. Valve has not yet disclosed the initial production numbers, leaving uncertainty about when additional units will be available for future purchasers. The device's market reception, despite its high price point, remains to be determined. If Valve successfully launches the Steam Machine within its projected price range of $1,000 to $1,400, it could potentially influence pricing for future console releases, a concern for gamers already facing increasing hardware costs.
