Known under the code ‘Project Century’ during its announcement at the Game Awards in December 2024, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios revealed the final title of their upcoming game at the Summer Game Fest. The game will be titled “Stranger than Heaven,” transporting players to Japan in 1943 during World War II. Goodbye Kamurocho, farewell to its clubs and neon-lit streets; “Stranger Than Heaven” immerses players in a war-torn Japan struggling with internal and external pressures. The story unfolds in Osaka, 1943, a drained country facing militaristic expansionism, political repression, and a fearful society paralyzed by contradictions. Players will take on the role of a detective who navigates between the personas of Sam Spade and Kurosawa’s anti-heroes within this challenging historical context. This is a bold choice as it delves into an era rarely depicted in Japanese video games, often hesitant to explore its darker historical periods. The developers behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series are taking on this challenge with courage, evident from the early images showcased at Summer Game Fest 2025.
Where “Like a Dragon” celebrated the exuberance of its turn-based gameplay, “Stranger Than Heaven” executes a radical break by introducing real-time battles with a streamlined interface designed for immersion. RGG Studio appears to aim for a certain form of dramatic tension, where each strike carries weight. To this end, “Stranger Than Heaven” will introduce a moral system that is initially subtle but has the potential to significantly structure gameplay. Some fights will offer players the choice to spare or not their enemies, and these decisions are intended to be more than mere narrative gimmicks; they are foundational elements capable of altering the player’s experience, relationships, or even the game’s conclusion. However, we will have to wait a little longer for confirmation, as no release date has been communicated to date.
