Gears of War E-Day: 12 minutes of gameplay to discover multiplayer modes

After a patient two-month wait, The Coalition has revealed an expansive new multiplayer experience for Gears of War that redefines the series with diverse co-op and competitive modes while rewarding players directly through gameplay instead of paid passes.

Gears of War has unveiled its multiplayer offerings, more than two months after the game's initial release. While the first gameplay reveal focused on the story mode, a significant portion of the fanbase is dedicated to the franchise's multiplayer component. The Coalition has detailed two key pillars of the multiplayer experience: a new cooperative mode called Horde Siege and a revamped Versus mode. Horde Siege evolves the classic Horde mode, allowing up to 12 players to work together in three squads of four. These squads will advance across large maps, each with independent objectives but capable of supporting each other against formidable waves of Locusts. Players can select from four distinct classes—Assaultman, Sharpshooter, and Medic—each featuring unique gear, abilities, and progression trees. Missions will comprise a mix of randomly generated primary and secondary objectives. Throughout the match, teams can acquire new weapons, upgrade their loadouts, confront giant bosses, and ultimately extract their squad for rewards, which are influenced by survival until evacuation. For those seeking a more traditional experience, a classic Horde mode will also be available, featuring ten waves of enemies on an enclosed map.

The Versus mode returns with 4v4 confrontations, where all players begin with identical equipment and then compete for weapons found throughout the map. The trailer highlights that Horde Siege will utilize the largest multiplayer maps in the series' history and incorporate timed chase objectives. Versus mode introduces new movement mechanics specifically designed for the EDay environment, enabling new strategic plays not previously available. The Coalition also revealed details about four specific modes within the Versus experience and teased post-launch content for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam (including cloud). At launch, six maps will be available: Park, Battleship, Outpost, Precinct, Market, and Skyward. Four game modes will be included: Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible, a variant of Conquest with a shrinking control zone. In a significant announcement, The Coalition confirmed that no Battle Pass is planned. Almost all cosmetic items will be unlockable through gameplay via Challenges, Achievements, Medals, and in-game currency. Only a few items associated with premium editions or special collaborations will be paid content.

If you've been following the shifting tides in Microsoft's gaming sector, it is essential to read "Xbox Plans New Round of Layoffs Amidst Asha Sharma's Led 'Reset'" by Marcus Thompson, published on 2026-06-13 Xbox Plans New Round of Layoffs Amidst Asha Sharma's Led 'Reset' which dives into Xbox division's upcoming restructuring under new CEO Asha Sharma, aiming to tackle slow Game Pass growth and declining hardware sales through a significant budget reduction in marketing and operational areas after the current fiscal year ends this June. While it presents a sobering look at that landscape as his article "Planned Xbox Layoffs Expected to Lead to Another Studio Closure," also published on June 13, 2026 Planned Xbox Layoffs Expected to Lead to Closure of Another Studio, details how reported revenue drops and rising hardware costs are forcing Sharma to confront potential mass layoffs that could result in the shutdown of yet another studio—marking a fourth consecutive year of internal cutbacks following previous closures like Perfect Dark, Redfall, Prey, Might Doom, and Hi-fi Rush—it is important to note that fans of tactical shooters have reason to celebrate. As highlighted in our latest article by Sophie Laurent published on 2026-06-13 (url) the Microsoft Xbox Games Showcase recently revealed that Gears of War: E-Day is returning as an exclusive title for Xbox Series X|S and PC. This highly anticipated prequel reverses previous multiplatform strategies to strengthen the brand by launching on October 6, 2026; developed with a darker atmosphere and a focus on terror, the game revisits Emergence Day to explore the events between Marcus and Dom that sparked their legendary war against humanity, allowing you to learn more about this exciting return to roots directly from Game Pass's launch catalog when it arrives later this year by checking out our full report via the link above.
