Silent Hill f: Finally, Gameplay – As Twisted and Disturbing as We Love It

by Bruno Pferd

Konami utilized the latest State of Play event to unveil the gameplay for Silent Hill f, a true new installment in the cult horror series. Importantly, the game now has an official release date: September 25, 2025, exclusive to PS5. Rather than merely reverting to its origins, Silent Hill f opts for a significantly different approach. Set in a new country and era, with a new heroine but retaining the same unsettling atmosphere, the psychological horror unfolds in rural Japan during the 1960s, decaying from within. The narrative takes place in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, where players assume the role of Shimizu Hinako, an ordinary high school student experiencing a gradual dissolution of reality around her. This world distorts, twists, and folds into itself amid thick fog, echoing Silent Hill’s core principles… The game’s creatures were created by kera, a Japanese artist, blending organically between plant life and decomposition. One encounters bodies entangled in flowers, faces consumed by roots, leading to mutations where flesh fuses with nature.

From a gameplay perspective, Silent Hill f emphasizes melee combat with a more direct approach than its predecessor, Silent Hill 2 Remake. Hinako can defend herself, but every encounter remains tense and risky. This is not an action game, yet fighting is necessary for survival. The soundtrack, composed by Akira Yamaoka (an iconic series composer) and Kensuke Uenga, features music that blends traditional instruments with oppressive sounds and heavy silences, creating an immersive auditory atmosphere. Additionally, the game highlights puzzles tied to the character’s psyche, their anxieties, and past experiences. Writer Ryukishi07 (known for Higurashi and Umineko) infuses Silent Hill f with his themes of trauma, the weight of silence, and memory. Certain scenes, such as those depicting frozen mannequins in a field, evoke Japanese traditions like kakashi and ekebi while perverting them. Silent Hill f is set for release on September 25, 2025, exclusively on PS5.
