During the State of Play event on June 6, 2025, Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo officially announced Nioh 3, the third entry in a series that has become well-established within the demanding action game genre. The Japanese studio presented a high-quality trailer and released a playable demo, available from today until June 18, exclusively on PlayStation 5. This strategic move aligns with the ambitious goals of an episode anticipated to be more intense, technical, and expansive than its predecessors. Set during the Sengoku period, one of the darkest eras in Japanese history marked by political, military, and spiritual turmoil, Nioh 3 follows a young warrior destined to become shogun but whose fate is intricately tied to the yōkai that plague the land. The motivation behind this relentless pursuit to eradicate these creatures remains undisclosed for now. What is clear is that this new installment poses a fundamental question: how far into darkness must one venture to restore order?
Two combat styles, one shared demand: A major innovation in this installment – Nioh 3 introduces a dual combat system that enables players to switch in real-time between Samurai and Ninja combat styles. Each style has its own unique mechanics, strengths, and limitations. The Samurai style adheres closely to the series’ tradition, emphasizing precise timing and controlled brutality. It includes traditional stances (high, medium, low) enhanced by two new features: Mastered Arts that boost martial arts power and Parry, a technique that rewards quick reflexes for blocking attacks meticulously. In contrast, the Ninja style is characterized by increased agility, overhead attacks, and strategic use of ninjutsu. Tools such as smoke bombs, evasion techniques, and even the ability to create clones enable players to strike quickly and vanish before retaliation can be administered.
Semi-open world: Another significant shift in the game’s structure involves Team Ninja abandoning instance-based mission progression to introduce a semi-open world, simply called the Domain. This change is not merely a format alteration but a design choice aimed at providing more exploration, interconnectivity, and surprises. The Japan of Nioh 3 reveals itself to be more varied and immersive, featuring moonlit forests, fog-shrouded villages, and temples corrupted by demonic crystals. Yōkai roam these lands, and humans are not necessarily more trustworthy. Additionally, the Purgatory, a new biome briefly mentioned in the trailer, embodies this philosophy as an absolute despair space where every step presents a challenge.
Team Ninja is engaging with its community by offering a playable demo today and soliciting player feedback, particularly on combat styles, the balance of the semi-open world, boss difficulty, and overall experience. An official questionnaire is available on the game’s website, and the feedback directly impacts the development direction. Character creation is returning but remains under finalization; it is already included in the demo. Nioh 3 is playable through the demo until June 18 on PS5.
