Four years after its announcement, Perfect Dark has finally unveiled its first gameplay trailer. Was the wait worthwhile? One might need more than three minutes of gameplay to be certain, but one thing is clear: this new installment diverges significantly from the original game. Whether it’s in the atmosphere, which now leans toward eco-thriller, or the gameplay that blends infiltration, parkour, and choreographed gunfights, the 2020s Joanna Dark will be more contemporary than ever, not just in her appearance. This level of innovation was essential for a comeback to live up to its name, even though the franchise may have faded from players’ radars, particularly among younger generations.
The game is being developed by two studios, The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, who have decided to enhance the gameplay options for these new adventures. It remains uncertain whether parkour continues to be an engaging feature today, but Joanna will be able to jump and cling like an athlete to cornices, reminiscent of Mirror’s Edge. She will also have several gadgets for hacking conversations, impersonating voices, and her combat techniques will combine classic shooting with unexpected hook kicks. As for the story, it will take place in a near future where Earth is struck by a series of global catastrophes, pushing the world’s ecosystems to the brink of collapse. Joanna Dark works for DataDyne and is tracking the world’s most wanted criminal, Daniel Carrington, to uncover the mysteries behind technological advancements that could threaten millions of lives.
Uncertain outcome however for this revised Perfect Dark.
