Dan Hay departed Ubisoft in 2021 following the game's launch. A Far Cry television series produced by Noah Hawley for Hulu is in development, featuring cast members Steve Buscemi and Lizzy Caplan. The show is an anthology, with each season set in different environments and featuring new characters. The next installment in the main Far Cry series, internally codenamed Kodiak, has officially entered development at Vantage Studios, according to Insider Gaming. This project replaces Maverick, a multiplayer extraction shooter spinoff that encountered significant development issues and was subsequently canceled. Ubisoft is returning to the franchise's core identity, abandoning Maverick's direction for now.

Kodiak is envisioned as an ambitious open-world first-person shooter where player interaction and emergent narratives play a central role. The game has just exited its design phase and leverages certain technologies developed for Maverick, though its overall orientation is now very different. Internal sources describe the project as highly ambitious, but still several years away from release. In parallel, Blackbird is also continuing its development. After experiencing lengthy delays due to technical and creative difficulties, the project has reportedly found a more stable trajectory. Charlie Guillemot described Blackbird as "truly impressive" during an internal presentation, suggesting it could serve as the launchpad for a new generation of Far Cry experiences if reception meets expectations. If this proves accurate, Ubisoft appears poised to transform Far Cry into a franchise capable of offering multiple complementary experiences, akin to its strategy with Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six. This reinforces that despite recent turbulent years, the franchise remains central to the French publisher's strategy.

Cooperative Multiplayer Returns in Kodiak Far Cry Title Without Extraction Mode Rumors

Kodiak will feature a cooperative multiplayer mode enabling multiple players to explore the world together. While specific gameplay details are still emerging, descriptions include scenes of characters shooting deer in a forest, using fire arrows from within a plane, and employing clubs and flamethrowers against barrels, consistent with existing franchise mechanics. Previous rumors of Far Cry 7 being set in Alaska with an extraction mode originated from the canceled Maverick project, not Kodiak. Maverick was reportedly intended as a Player-versus-Player-versus-Environment (PvPvE) game with timed sessions for players to gather loot while contending with wildlife. Vantage Studios, co-owned by Tencent, manages the Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six franchises.
