Jason Schreier Explains Reasons for E3's End

Pedro Zambarda, Chief Editor at a leading investigative journalism company in the video game industry, shares his personal reaction to Jason Schreier's latest YouTube video "The End of E3," discussing the discontinuation of the major annual gaming trade show and its key factors contributing to its demise during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jason Schreier Launches YouTube Channel to Discuss the Video Game Industry Investigative journalist Jason Schreier has launched a YouTube channel, expanding his analysis of the video game industry beyond his work at Bloomberg and his podcast. This new platform delivers quality English-language videos examining the market. Schreier recently released a video titled "The Real Reason E3 Died," discussing the decline of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). This significant gaming trade show, established in 1995, concluded in 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, E3 functioned as a business-to-business (B2B) event, convening game developers, publishers, press, and retailers. Its primary purpose was facilitating industry connections and deals, especially with physical retailers preparing for peak sales periods. Manufacturers utilized E3 to pitch their offerings to retailers, a critical step when physical sales represented the dominant market.

The advent of streaming culture and the rise of digital distribution began to reshape the industry. Although E3 evolved to include more consumer-facing elements, its core B2B function remained vital, often termed the "real E3" by industry insiders. Even as companies like Nintendo introduced their own direct communication platforms, such as Nintendo Direct in 2011, they continued to participate in E3. Nintendo notably maintained a strong presence, showcasing games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with substantial booth displays. Nintendo Direct also served as a strategy to mitigate pre-E3 leaks of game information.

E3's Demise Attributed to Shift in Retail and Digital Culture Amid Growing Influence of Livestreams

The challenges facing E3 became increasingly apparent in the years preceding its cancellation. ReedPop partnered with event organizers for a planned 2023 iteration, intended to be both online and in-person. However, a growing number of major industry players, including Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Sega, and Ubisoft, withdrew their participation. Key factors contributing to E3's downfall included escalating exhibition costs and a diminishing impact as digital sales became the industry standard. Companies found that investing in livestreams and publisher-specific events, such as direct announcements and State of Play presentations, offered a more cost-effective and targeted approach compared to the high expense of booth rentals at E3. Following E3's cancellation, Geoff Keighley introduced the Summer Game Fest as an alternative event. Schreier's analysis emphasizes that E3's demise was predominantly driven by the decline of physical retail and the subsequent collapse of its B2B model, rather than solely by the withdrawal of individual companies like Nintendo. By 2024, digital sales had become the ruling force in the global console game market, reducing retailers' reliance on E3 for product selections and significantly diminishing the show's influence on physical game sales.
