Monolith Soft has revealed its next project, Xenoblade Genesis, during the latest Nintendo Direct, marking a departure from a direct sequel to the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy for a new direction within the franchise. While initial visuals suggest a departure from the series’ established aesthetic, with a more medieval tone and designs reminiscent of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, core elements characteristic of Tetsuya Takahashi’s writing remain evident. Central to Xenoblade Genesis are philosophical, religious, and metaphysical themes, centering on Anima—a mysterious energy presented as the source of all life and creation. The game is set in Leukos, a world with a unique structure. Early imagery depicts a universe contained within an immense ringworld or a colossal sphere that defies conventional physics, further emphasized by the presence of six suns.

Xenoblade Genesis is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in mid-2027. The game introduces Vesselai, characters capable of manipulating Anima via Crystones, a concept reminiscent of the “blades and pilots” from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
