007 First Light a Hit, Still Not Profitable for IO Interactive

In an unexpected turn, "007 First Light," despite selling over 2.7 million copies and being on track to surpass IO Interactive's internal goals, hasn't turned a profit yet due to shared revenues, development costs, and marketing expenses - but promising updates are coming soon!

007 First Light Achieves Strong Sales but Awaits Profitability Amidst Evolving James Bond License Landscape 007 First Light has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 2.7 million copies within its first week of release. However, the game has yet to reach its breakeven point, a situation that highlights both the project's considerable scale and the constraints imposed by the James Bond license. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz during Summer Game Fest 2026, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak confirmed that 007 First Light has surpassed all studio expectations and is approaching 3 million units sold. While this sales performance is an undeniable success, it has not yet translated into profitability.

Recent reports have estimated the game's development cost to be close to $200 million. Abrak sought to provide a more nuanced perspective, explaining that this figure encompasses marketing, performance bonuses, and other ancillary costs, rather than solely game production. He indicated that the pure development budget is lower than these publicly cited amounts, though he did not disclose the exact figure. The game's current financial standing, despite strong sales, is also influenced by agreements surrounding the James Bond license, which involve revenue sharing with multiple partners, including royalty systems. Abrak assured that the project has already exceeded all internal goals and is on track to become the studio's biggest commercial success in history.

The current landscape for the James Bond video game license raises questions about its future. Following Amazon's acquisition of MGM, the American company now holds creative control and has confirmed that future games will be supervised by Amazon Games. There is no indication that IO Interactive will be excluded from future projects, as Abrak confirmed ongoing discussions with Amazon, deeming a new James Bond game developed by the Danish studio very feasible. For now, both companies are focused on delivering the first year of content for 007 First Light, which includes new missions, a New Game mode, additions for Tactical Simulations, and the upcoming release of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. According to Alinea Analytics, by June 2, 007 First Light had sold approximately 2.2 million copies, generating about $150 million in total revenue. The PlayStation 5 was the primary platform for sales, accounting for 55.1% of the total. Steam represented 33% of purchases, while Xbox Series S or X accounted for less than 12%. Notably, the Steam version of 007 First Light has seen significant popularity in China, with Chinese players making up over 17% of all Steam sales.

James Bond Game Development Costs and Amazon's Publishing Shift Differ from IO Interactive's 007 First Light

The cost to develop 007 First Light is estimated at around 1.3 billion Danish kroner, approximately $202 million. This figure includes development, marketing, performance bonuses, and other associated expenses. It is MGM, not IO Interactive, that holds the rights for the James Bond franchise. Future James Bond games may be published by Amazon Game Studios, a situation that contrasts with 007 First Light, which was self-published by IO Interactive. This potential shift in publishing strategy occurs as Amazon has also recently closed internal studios responsible for titles like New World and The Lord of the Rings MMO.
