Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams Unveiled After Original Project Cancellation

Square Enix has unveiled the first trailer for what is now known as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. Previously revealed as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, the game has undergone a significant development restart. During a live broadcast, Executive Producer Yosuke Saito and Series Creator Yuji Horii explained that the development team encountered difficulties with the original concept. This led to the decision to cancel the project and restart it from scratch with a new team and a fresh concept. “It was an important decision, but I believe it was the right one to ensure that the next Dragon Quest game is one that all series fans will truly love,” Saito stated. As part of this new direction, the game’s subtitle and logo have also been changed. Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams has restarted development under a new structure. While the team is working diligently, the restart means the game will take longer to reach players.

The teaser trailer offered a glimpse of the main characters and hinted at the story, which will revolve around a young hero plagued by strange dreams. Series creator Yuji Horii described the protagonist as entering the story as one of Akira Toriyama’s final creations. Toriyama, the acclaimed illustrator, passed away in 2024. Koichi Sugiyama composed the soundtrack. While the visual style from the previous installment has been preserved, the graphics in Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams are significantly more detailed. Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams does not yet have a release date. In other Dragon Quest news: The latest addition to the Dragon Quest Monsters series, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, is heading to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Windows. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. A limited-time campaign for Dragon Quest Smash is offering in-game events and rewards. The original Dragon Quest game was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame this month.

The recently released Dragon Quest I & II HD2D Remake and Dragon Quest III HD2D Remake have collectively sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Square Enix, Inc. was named Publisher of the Year in 2025 by Metacritic.
