Exclusive games remain a primary driver for console purchases among American consumers, according to a Q1 2026 survey conducted by Circanus and shared by journalist Chris Dring of The Game Business podcast. The survey revealed that 41% of interviewed consumers cited exclusive games as the main reason for buying a console, an 8% decrease from the previous year. Another 38% indicated that owning the same system as friends or family was a deciding factor in their console choice. In light of these findings, Sony and Microsoft are reconsidering their multiplatform strategies. Sony has stated it will not release more games on PC this year. The company is adopting a more measured approach, releasing some titles on PC only after a period of PlayStation 5 exclusivity. Microsoft, conversely, continues to pursue multiplatform releases. The company appears concerned about the potential devaluation of its cheaper Xbox hardware and has ended its “This is an Xbox” campaign. This campaign previously highlighted the ability to stream Xbox games on internet-connected devices such as TVs, tablets, and computers.
