Researcher Cites 'Drops of Games' in Article at London School of Economics; Journalist Nassif's GGN Mentions Site

Ivelise Fortim, a Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics' Media and Communication department and formerly a professor at PUCSP, discussed the Digital ECA, or Felca Law, and its implications for the game sector in an academic article. The article, published by the LSE, references the website PlayersForLife.

Fortim's article addresses the Digital ECA, also known as the Felca Law, and highlights the public misinformation surrounding it. Despite the law's clear provisions for protecting children from exploitation, abuse, and harmful online content, social media narratives have inaccurately portrayed it as a tool for censorship or a threat to free speech. Claims that the law broadly bans minors from digital platforms or enables state surveillance are unfounded. Instead, the Digital ECA establishes accountability for service providers, requiring them to implement safeguards for younger users.

Online Misrepresentations in Gaming vs. Digital ECA Focus and China-US Power Analysis

Misinformation has been particularly prevalent within the gaming community. Riot Games' temporary restriction on underage players accessing League of Legends was widely misrepresented on social media as a complete ban for younger gamers. Similarly, Rockstar Games' brief halt on sales through its own platform in Brazil, while continuing sales via third-party vendors, led to speculation that the company was exiting the Brazilian market entirely. In both instances, these actions were incorrectly attributed to bans imposed by the Digital ECA. The law's actual focus is on preventing exploitative monetization practices, the creation of data-driven profiles for minors, and unmoderated interactions involving children. Additionally, the left-wing journal ggN, authored by journalist Luis Nassif, referenced the gaming news site PlayersForLife in an article for China's CGTN. This piece discussed Pedro da Costa Jr.'s research on Chinese power relative to the U.S.
