Gang of Dragons Faces Uncertain Future as Netease Games Halts Funding Gang of Dragons, a game announced with significant anticipation at The Game Awards last December, now appears to be in jeopardy. Development by Nagoshi Studio faces an uncertain future after Netease Games reportedly withdrew its financial backing. A Bloomberg investigation in March 2026 revealed that the Chinese publisher decided to cut funding for the game. This decision stemmed from escalating budget costs and a broader reassessment of Netease's investments. The project has already incurred costs of approximately 44 million. Toshihiro Nagoshi, head of Nagoshi Studio and a key figure behind the Yakuza series, is reportedly seeking tens of millions more to complete development. To salvage the project, Nagoshi is actively seeking new sponsors to acquire the Gang of Dragons license from Netease Games. Netease Games is open to releasing Nagoshi Studio from their publishing contract, provided the development team purchases the game's property and assets.
Financial Uncertainty Looms over Gang of Dragons Project Amidst Removed Content and Funding Delays
Recent developments have amplified concerns about the game's viability. The official YouTube channel for Gang of Dragons was removed on April 24, 2026, deleting all associated trailers. While the Steam page for the game remains accessible, the disappearance of official content signals potential trouble. Industry observers note that such clean-up actions typically precede unfavorable news. Nagoshi Studio has reportedly been attempting to find partners to take over the project or buy out existing costs. However, no concrete developments have emerged. The studio's recent actions, including the removal of its YouTube channel and other social media content related to development, do not inspire optimism. Gang of Dragons had promised an appealing new license centered on modern gangs, featuring actor Ma Dongseok (Don Lee) and aiming to be a spiritual successor to the Yakuza series. These ambitions, however, have not been enough to secure the necessary funding for completion. While the possibility of finding alternative funding sources exists, the current circumstances strongly suggest the project faces significant challenges.
